South Sudan government, rebels agree to ceasefire

Rebel and government forces in South Sudan have agreed to a ceasefire and want to begin peace talks, mediators said, dpa reported.

According to a statement from the Kenyan government quoting an envoy from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, former vice president Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir have appointed representatives to negotiate a ceasefire.

"The talks will focus on a monitored ceasefire followed by further dialogue aimed at solving the underlying political problems that led to the emergence of the present confrontation," the statement said.

Any groups still engaged in fighting were urged to lay down arms.
