At least 9 people have died due to blizzard-like conditions across north-eastern regions of the United States, with the National Weather Service predicting that temperatures will continue to fall over the weekend, dpa reported.

The deaths occured as a result of difficult traffic conditions, and include road incidents in the north-eastern states of Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Indiana, US media reported on Saturday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted temperatures of minus 34 degrees across sections of the north-central and north-eastern states on Sunday, warning that temperatures may feel as cold as minus 46 to 51.

Metereologists have warned that temperatures in certain regions of the Midwest may reach their lowest point in 15 years, with the NWS referring to "arctic intrusions" across the nation.

Snow ploughing teams were deployed in urban areas of Boston, Washington and Philadelphia. CNN reports that 24,000 snow ploughing vehicles were working around the clock in New York City.

Aviation website flightaware.com reported a total of 3,000 cancelled flights, as well as more than 11,000 delayed flights. Hundreds of schools and businesses were closed.

Overall, around 100 million people have been affected in more than 20 US states.
