The trial of Egypt's ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi on charges of inciting the killing of protesters was to resume Wednesday in Cairo.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, faces charges of inciting the killing of 10 opposition protesters in December 2012. He could face the death penalty if convicted, dpa reported.

Also charged are 14 other defendants from Morsi's administration and his Muslim Brotherhood group. The trial opened in November.

Morsi, who was deposed by the military in July, also faces two other trials on charges related to escaping prison during the 2011 uprising that toppled his predecessor Hosny Mubarak and sponsoring terrorism.

Morsi has said all the charges against him are politically motivated.
