By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

The case of opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi is under judicial review, secretary of the Iranian Judiciary's Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani said, ISNA news agency reported on Jan 8.

Karroubi and Mousavi have been under house arrest since 2011 due to protests over the 2009 presidential election.

Larijani underlined that the Iranian Judiciary has showed tolerance towards Mousavi and Karroubi prolonging the legal process due to their positive background in the Islamic republic.

On Nov. 22, the head of Iran's Guardian Council, Ahmad Jannati, said the opposition leaders under house arrest should be thankful for not having been given the death sentence.

He added that the two leaders are alive due to 'Islamic mercy'.

Larijani went on to say that Judiciary officials will carry out the appropriate investigation on the issue "in time."

On Dec. 29, Iranian influential MP, Ali Motahari urged the judiciary to end the house arrests of Mousavi and Karroubi and put them on trial.

"The protracted house arrests are without trial and lack of legal or religious justification," Motahari said.

He also repeated his request on the simultaneous open trial of Mousavi, Karoubi and ex-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Earlier, Mohammad-Baqer Nobakh, spokesman for Iran's administration said the administration of President Hassan Rouhani is pursuing the release of the jailed opposition leaders as well as political prisoners.
