AEOI head: Iran currently does not need to enrich uranium to 20 percent

Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 11

By Temkin Jafarov - Trend:

Iran has the reserves of 20 percent enriched uranium for the next four or five years and does not currently need to enrich uranium to 20 percent, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said on Jan. 11 in an interview with the Jam-e Jam TV channel, ISNA news agency reported.

He said the suspension of uranium enrichment up to 20 percent corresponds to Iran's national interests.

"This issue was one of the reasons for differences between Iran and the P5+1 countries, and they protested against the production of centrifuges by Iran," Salehi said.

He also noted that a few days ago the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. During the conversation an agreement was reached in connection with the start of the second phase of the Bushehr nuclear power plant's construction.
