Two children were listed in critical condition after another student opened fire in a middle school in Roswell, New Mexico on Tuesday, dpa reported.

Eyewitnesses at Berrendo Middle School said they saw a 13-year-old male student shoot a 14-year-old boy in the face, the Albuquerque Journal reported. A 13-year-old girl was also shot.

Both victims were airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, a spokesman for UMC Health System told the newspaper.

On its Facebook page, the Roswell police department said the suspect had been apprehended.

Sixth-grader Anyssa Vegara told the Albuquerque Journal she heard a shot inside the school.

"I turned around and all I saw was someone on the floor with their arm bleeding," Vegara said, according to the report.

The school remained on lockdown Tuesday. The Roswell police department said it was shuttling students to a nearby mall, where parents could pick them up.

In December 2012, a gunman shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

According to stoptheshootings.org, an online school shooting database, there have been 387 school shootings in the US since 1992.
