Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have common historical roots, cultural traditions and spiritual and moral values, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting with Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims Office Allahshukur Pashazade, the Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary state news agency said on Wednesday.

"Our people are connected by common historical roots, cultural traditions and spiritual and moral values from the earliest period of time," the president said.

"Turkmenistan intends to continue exerting efforts aimed at developing constructive cooperation in the cultural-humanitarian sphere, the convergence of fraternal Turkmen and Azerbaijani people, studying and promoting our rich heritage and establishing close contacts in various fields," the president said.

Chairman of the Council of Elders, Azerbaijani MP Fattah Heydarov and Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Turkmenistan Vahdet Sultanzade attended the meeting.

During the meeting the representatives of the Azerbaijani side stressed that the Caucasus supports the Turkmen leader's policy aimed at ensuring global peace and security, according to the report.

Independent neutral Turkmenistan chose a course to establish broad international cooperation in the common interest. It is successfully pursuing a policy of open doors from year to year by strengthening economic, cultural and humanitarian relations with all countries, including those of the Caucasus.

Turkmenistan is one of the key players in the energy market in the Caspian region and Central Asia.

Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are interested in using alternative routes for delivering energy resources of the Caspian region to Europe. Turkmenistan's hydrocarbon resources can be connected towards a European direction through the Caspian Sea by the construction of a 300 kilometre pipeline along the sea bottom to the coast of Azerbaijan. Then the fuel can be sent to Turkey which has a common border with European countries.

The recent intensification of Turkmen oil transportation via Azerbaijan can be referred to as a brilliant example of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
