PACE co-rapporteur expresses concern about termination of Tbilisi mayor’s authority

Tbilisi, Georgia, Jan. 15

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

The co-rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee, Michael Jensen has expressed concern today about Georgian court's decision on suspension of Tbilisi Mayor, Gigi Ugulava's authority.

He said it is particularly troubling given the fact that Georgia will soon hold local municipal elections.

"Naturally, no one is exempt from liability, but the court should show some restraint when it comes to elected officials," Jensen said.

The PACE representatives stated that they will necessarily follow the processes developing around the cases of Gigi Ugulava and Vano Merabishvili and this will be reflected in their report to be submitted to PACE in April.

During their visit, the PACE Co-rapporteurs, Michael Jensen and Boriss Cilevics met with the Georgian president and prime minister and other representatives of the government and parliament, as well as, non-governmental sector.

Their next visit to Tbilisi will presumably take place in spring. The PACE co-rapporteurs are preparing a report for the organization's session.
