Georgian PM lacks understanding of PACE concerns over termination of Tbilisi mayor’s authority

Tbilisi, Georgia, Jan.16
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili doesn't understand PACE rapporteurs concern in connection with the termination of authority of Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulava.

Such a position is related to the ignorance of the issue's essence, Garibashvili told journalists on Jan.16.

At a final press conference on Jan.16, co-rapporteur of the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Michael Jensen expressed concern that the court has terminated the authority of Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulava. This is particularly troubling given the fact that Georgia will held local elections soon, he said.

They cannot even imagine that the city mayor could steal 50 million lari from his fellow citizens, therefore they have questions, but I personally can dispel all their doubts, " Garibashvili said.

The prime minister pointed out that courts abroad also make such decisions on a similar dismissal.

"In Canada the court dismissed a mayor for abuse and therefore I believe we are not pioneers," Garibashvili stressed.

Additionally, Garibashvili said that all speculations about the alleged political background of the arrest of former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili are unreasonable.

The prime minister stated that all cases initiated against the senior officials of the former government will be brought to an end.

Merabishvili is accused of abuse of power during dispersing an opposition rally on May 26, 2011.
