Libyan Interior Minister al-Sediq Abdel-Karim has survived an assassination attempt in Tripoli, Libya's official news agency LANA reported Wednesday.

Unidentified gunmen shot a volley of bullets at his car as he was on his way to work, the agency said, citing an unnamed security official, dpa reported.

The assailants fled and the minister escaped unharmed. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Libya's post-revolutionary rulers have been struggling to assert their authority amid a proliferation of weapons and militias since the ouster and killing of Moamer Gaddafi in October 2011.

Former rebels who took part in the revolt against Gaddafi have resisted the Libyan authorities' efforts to disarm them.
