The Parliament of Turkmenistan will reconsider the codes "About the earth" and "About water", chairman of the committee on environmental protection, nature management and agro industry, Rajabgeldi Meredov told Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper in an interview.
The head of the state has brought our attention to the necessity of reconsideration of the codes of Turkmenistan "About the earth" and "About water" from a point of rational usage of these resources", the deputy said.
The shift of the country's agro industrial complex to an innovative way of development with the usage of low-wasted and ecology-oriented technologies will play an important role in this sphere, according to Meredov.
The deputy has mentioned that many regional problems are connected with usage and protection of water resources.
"In particular, adoption of the new code "About Water" will create the necessary "growth points" for further effective cooperation among Turkmenistan and neighboring countries in the protection and use of transboundary watercourses and reservoirs," Meredov said.
In 2012 Turkmenistan joined the U.N. Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes dated March 17, 1992.
The U.N. Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) welcomed the decision of the Turkmen Parliament, saying that this is an important action towards strengthening the transboundary water cooperation and integrated water resource management. This agreement is very important for the country, most of which is covered by desert.
Turkmenistan borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan and uses the water resources available in accordance with the quota of four transboundary rivers, namely, the Amudarya, Tedjen, Atrek and Murghab. Nearly 90 percent of the total flow of water in Turkmenistan comes from the Amudarya River.
An important issue of environmental security in the region is to solve the problems of the Aral Sea. This requires improving the legal framework of water and land resource management. Moreover, the agenda includes the need to improve international cooperation in the area of climate change.
