The Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CE), Thorbjorn Jagland has made an official statement in connection with the start of the two-year action plan for Georgia.

The action plan envisages the implementation of various projects in the country aimed at human rights protection. Georgia very seriously approaches the European integration issue, according to Jagland.

"I am glad as I see that almost all political forces have united around this issue and there is a unity on this issue. Georgia has implemented certain reforms, strengthened democracy and rule of law," Jagland said.

The secretary general also touched upon the self-government code approved by Georgian parliament.

"I can only say that this law has already been adopted and there were consultations between CE experts and Georgia. The most important thing today is to hold free and fair elections which will be closely observed, and this process will cause a greater, real decentralization. I can say that the process develops well. Perhaps, there can also be problems, but it is good that this process has begun," Jagland said.

This plan was considered during Jagland's visit to Georgia last week.
