Georgia as part of fulfilment of its international commitments will switch to the digital broadcasting starting from June 17, 2015, the First Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Dimitry Kumsishvili said at a press conference on Feb. 14.
As a result of an active work, which lasted few months, the Economy and Sustainable Development Ministry has developed a document that defines the main areas of transition to the digital broadcasting and the action plan.
The document was developed to meet the requirements of broadcasters with local and international organizations' participation.
Kumsishvili said that the transition to digital broadcasting has a lot of advantages for the country, for broadcasters and the public.
"First of all, the transition to digital broadcasting will assist media pluralism, freedom of expression and the subsequent development of television. Aside from that, within the reforms, the state will support the socially unprotected families with 'set-top-boxes'," he said.
An agency for digital broadcasting will be created at the Economy and Sustainable Development Ministry.
The agency will manage large-scale information campaign in connection with the reform.
In particular, social ads of informative character and videos will be created, as well as special reference booklets will be published for the population, and a hotline will be established for obtaining information.
