By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

First celebrated in 1995, National Flag Day has been marked today by festive celebrations and the president's message to the people.

"Some 22 years ago the Turkmen people created their national flag, which today is a crown of triumph of the national spirit and reflection of the fulfilled cherished dream of the Turkmen people about an independent state, a peaceful and prosperous life," Berdimuhamedov said.

Turkmenistan establishes friendly relations with peoples and countries of the world for the sake of sustainable development in the third millennium, by closely cooperating with large international organizations, primarily with the UN, according to the president.

"This policy contributes to increasing the prestige of Turkmenistan in the international arena as a country committed to the principles of peace, benevolence and humanity, mutually beneficial cooperation, strictly following international standards, " the statement said.

The Turkmen flag has a green background with a vertical red and burgundy stripe, five national carpet patterns, a white crescent and five stars on it.

The National flag symbolizes unity, solidarity and brotherhood.

Using green is not by chance. The green color symbolizes the unity of time, life and land. The crescent represents a clear sky and white five-pointed stars are the symbol of the five regions of the Caspian country.

A 133 meter tall flagpole was set up in the square outside the National Museum in Ashgabat in 2008. On it flies a flag weighing nearly half a ton and measuring 52.2 by 35 meters, certified by Guinness World Records.
