Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

New rules will be implemented in Turkey starting today as part of measures to fight against drunken drivers, Turkish Milliyet newspaper reported

The driving licenses of those caught driving drunk for the first time will be suspended for six months, according to the report.

In case of a second occurrence, the driver's license will be suspended for two years, and if for a third time - for five years.

Turkey has been taking a series of measures to minimize traffic accidents. Recently Turkey made the use of seatbelts on buses mandatory for passengers.

Every year over 8,000 people are killed in road accidents in Turkey, most of the victims being those aged 15-29, according to official statistics.

Excessive speed is the cause of 34 percent of fatal accidents.

Approximately 385,000 people have been killed in road accidents in Turkey in the past 30 years.
