Iran will start building a special hospital for treatment of patients that need nuclear medicines in the next Iranian calendar year (to start on March 21), Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said, the country's Mehr news agency reported on Feb. 26.

He went on to say that some radio-medicines are useful for only 15 minutes, so should be used immediately after production.

"Iran will build a nuclear treatment center where the radio-medicines will be produced in the same center," Kamalvandi added.

The private sector will participate in the project, he underlined, adding that the center will be under supervision of the AEOI.

Kamalvandi also said that the AEOI experts have produced 15 types of radio-medicines so far.

The medicines help the diagnosis and treatment of intractable diseases, he added.

Some 1 million people in Iran are under treatment with radio- medicines, he remarked.

The U.S. and its Western allies suspect Iran of developing a nuclear weapon - something that Iran denies. The Islamic Republic has on numerous occasions stated that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, using nuclear energy for medical research instead.

International sanctions against Iran have hindered trade of medicines, as pharmaceutical firms have been refusing to sell Iran drugs due to difficulties in receiving payments. This has led to shortages of some vital medicine in the country.

Iranian health authorities say the sanctions have made it impossible to obtain medications needed for some diseases.
