By Rufiz Hafizoglu- Trend:

The decision of the Constitutional Court gives grounds for the release of former Chief of Staff retired General Ilker Basbug, the Turkish Milliyet newspaper quotes Turkey`s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc as saying on March 7.

The Constitutional Court decision is well-timed, according to Arinc.

Also the Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that a number of people which were arrested in the framework of the Ergenekon case can be released today.

The Turkish Constitutional Court made a decision on arrested Chief of General Staff General Basbug on March 6.

Constitutional Court expressed its attitude to the backlog of applications filed by Bashbug`s lawyer to the lower court to change the measure of restraint in the form of arrest.

"Backlog of applications filed by the lawyer in the lower court, is estimated as a violation of personal freedom and the right to security," the Constitutional Court decision said.

The Turkish court sentenced 70-year-old former head of General Staff to life imprisonment under the Ergenekon coup trial last Aug. 5.

The court recognized Ergenekon, which was involved in the military coup in Turkey in 2006, as a terrorist organization.

A number of senior Turkish servicemen were sentenced to life in prison together with Basbug.
General Basbug resigned in 2010.
