The transport sphere has gained strategic importance in Turkmenistan's economy.

Turkmenistan plans to complete the construction of its section of the North-South railway towards the Iranian border by late 2014.

The agreement on the North-South project was signed between Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran in 2007. This project can open an optimal way for European and Asian countries to Central Asia and the Persian Gulf.

Initially, up to three-five million tons of cargo per year will be transported via this route.

The volumes will increase to 10-12 million tons in the future, according to the preliminary estimates. The project is implemented with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank.
