Only about 1.2 percent of females work in Iran's mining industry, the country's Statistical Centre said on March 30.

In total 1079 females are working in various sectors of the mining industry all over the country.

According to the statistics, most of the women, 301, work in the iron ore sector (27.8 percent), followed by sand and gravel mining - 146 (13.5 percent), copper ore - 125 (11.5 percent), coal mining - 96 (8.89 percent), decorative stone mining - 95 (8.80 percent).

Of 1079 women, 321 (29.7 percent) work in manufacturing mining sector, while the remaining 758 (70.2 percent) are in the non-manufacturing sector.

The females work in Iranian provinces of Kerman, Golestan, Khorasan Razavi, Semnan, Zencan and Isfahan.

Iran holds three percent of the world's mineral reserves which puts the country first in the Middle East and third in Asia.

The Islamic Republic ranks among the 15 major mineral-rich countries of the world and exports its industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, the United Arab Emirates, India and Afghanistan.

The important mines of Iran include coal, metallic minerals, sand and gravel, chemical minerals and salt.

The country ranks 1st, 2nd and 9th in the world regarding zinc, copper and iron reserves respectively.
