Serik Akhmetov has been appointed Kazakhstan's minister of defense, the country's presidency said on April 3.

Akhmetov replaced Adilbek Dzhaksybekov in this post and the latter has been appointed secretary of state of Kazakhstan.

Akhmetov previously served as prime minister from September 24, 2012. He has been the first deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan since January 2002 and governor of Karaganda province since November 2009.

Akhmetov was born on June 25, 1958 in Karaganda province. He worked as the governor of Temirtau city from 2001, then first deputy mayor of Astana city, the head of the State Inspection Department of the organizational-control work and the personnel policy of the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan, Chairman of the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers of Kazakhstan, 'Atameken', Minister of Transport and Communications, Deputy Prime Minister.

Serik Akhmetov resigned from the post of prime minister on April 2. Later the president proposed Karim Massimov's candidacy for this post. Majlis members unanimously voted for the appointment of Massimov to the post of Kazakhstan's prime minister.
