Iran will support any person who is elected by the Afghan people, senior Iranian official says.

Successful holding of presidential elections in Afghanistan showed the political insight of Afghan people, Iran's deputy foreign minister, Ebrahim Rahimpour said, Iranian IRNA news agency reported on April 7.

Iran respects the results of the democratic election in the country, he underlined.

Rahimpour also called the elections as valuable achievement for Afghanistan, adding that Iran welcomes this positive development in the neighboring country of Afghanistan.

The third round of presidential elections which held on April 5 drew a large turnout despite threats from the Taliban group to disrupt the balloting.

At least 23 people were killed on election day and the prior day, mostly soldiers and police officers, the Afghanistan government announced.

Hamid Karzai was chosen by Afghan leaders to head the country after the fall of the Taliban, won two subsequent presidential elections in 2004 and 2009.
