Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag says he does not agree with the Constitutional Court's repeals of certain articles of the controversial new judicial law, but the government will abide by its decision, Anadolu Agency reported.
The Constitutional Court found Friday that some articles in the HSYK law giving powers to the Justice Minister were unconstitutional.
The Court repealed the Justice Minister's power to appoint the HSYK members to the departments within the body of the HSYK.
"Constitutional Court cannot undo decisions. The changes made till now are valid," said Bozdag.
The Constitutional Court kept some of the powers of the minister, namely his power over the Turkish Justice Academy intact.
This aspect of the law allows Turkey's government to have more control in the training of judges by transferring their training from the judicial board to the Turkish Justice Academy. The HSYK is the top body in charge of the assignments of judges and prosecutors. HSYK also acts as a high court in investigations towards all judicial staff.
