By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

Following a violent incident at Iran's Evin prison, a special team was assembled to investigate, and look into the details of the matter. The incident involved a violent beating on a number of political prisoners, who were held in the prison.

The Spokesman of the Iranian government, Mohammad Bagher Nobakht said that the results of the investigation will be made public upon completion, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on April 23.

An inspection of prisoners' cells that has taken place in the prison earlier, forced some prisoners to stage a protest against such actions, which took over five hours to complete, according to Iranian reformist news websites.

In order to silence the protest, forces from the intelligence ministry along with the members of Iran's IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) swarmed one of the Evin prison sections, and started beating down on the political prisoners there on April 17. Reportedly, some prison guards also participated in the beatings.

Reportedly more than 30 prisoners were injured, and at least four had to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison.

However the head of Iran's Prisons Organization, Gholamhossein Esmaili has denied that any such incidents took place in Evin prison, saying that "such rumours are merely being spread by "anti-revolutionaries, and are baseless".

Iranian MP Hossein Sobhania claimed that one of the inspections revealed some prisoners having such items as cell phones, SIM cards and even alcohol. All the items were confiscated.

The MP went on to add that some cell phones and other undisclosed electronic devices were used to "spread wrong information to foreign and anti-revolutionary media."

This is while nine Iranian lawmakers have warned the country's minister of justice, Mostafa Pourmohammadi on the fact of the incident actually taking place in Evin prison. The MPs requested Pourmohammadi to pursue the case.
