Kazakhstan ratifies agreement on strategic partnership with Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, April 25

By Demir Azizov- Trend:

The Senate of Kazakh parliament has approved the draft law "On ratification of the agreement on strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan", a message from the Kazakh Senate said on April 25.

The agreement was signed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in June 2013 during the official visit of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to this country. The document sets out the basic principles and priority areas of the bilateral cooperation in political, trade, economic, transport, communication, cultural, humanitarian, military, technical, ecological and other spheres.

The agreement says the parties provide their joint support and assistance in preventing the threats to their independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The document also confirms a single coordinated position regarding the development of an equitable water use system in Central Asia. This system needs to include the resolution of all issues in the water and energy spheres, as well as creation of new waterworks crossing transborder rivers, in accordance with the universally recognized norms of the international law and the interests of all Central Asian states.

The law on ratification of the agreement was adopted by the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis (lower house of the Uzbek parliament) in August 2013 and was approved by the Senate (upper house) in December of the same year.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov signed the law "On ratification of the friendship and cooperation agreement between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan" on Dec.24, 2013.

Kazakhstan is one of the important trade partners of Uzbekistan. Currently, around 180 enterprises with participation of Kazakh investors operate in Uzbekistan. Over 120 enterprises created with participation of Uzbek residents have been registered in Kazakhstan.

Over 810,000 Kazakhs reside in Uzbekistan and nearly 460,000 Uzbeks in Kazakhstan, according to statistical data.
