Former Iranian Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi arrived in Iraq's Kurdistan Region today to discuss economic ties with Kurdistan Regional Government's Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani.

Qasemi heads an economic delegation, Iran's IRIB reported on April 26.

Rostam Qasemi was appointed by Iranian First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri as the secretary of the Iran-Iraq economic development headquarters.

There are signs of growing trade between Iran and Iraq's Kurdistan Region.

The Parviz Khan border crossing in western Iranian city of Qasr-e Shirin was named the most active trade checkpoint out of 86 crossings between Iran and Iraq, Press TV reported in June 2013.

Trade levels started to increase after former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was toppled in 2003.

Iran is the Kurdistan Region's second largest trade partner after Turkey.

There are also signs of widening relations outside of the trade sector.

Direct flights between Arbil and Iran's Urmia city were launched in March 2013. Flights between Arbil and Tehran were launched last year.
