The health condition of the head of Turkish Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions, Kani Beko deteriorated during a rally, held with regard to the death of 282 miners, Turkish Milliyet newspaper reported on May 15.

Beko suffered poisoning from tear gas. The tear gas was used by the Izmir police to disperse the demonstrators.

Reportedly, over 20,000 trade union members hold protests in Turkey today in connection with the deaths of miners in the Manisa Province.

An emergency situation occurred at a mine in Turkish province of Manisa on May 13.

The works for rescuing the miners are underway despite little hope for saving them, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Taner Yildiz said earlier.

Currently more than 90 people remain under the rubble.

Turkey yesterday announced a three day mourning period for victims of the mining accident. In total there are 740 coal mines and 48,706 miners in Turkey.

Over 3,000 people have been killed and over 100,000 received various injuries since 1941 to the present day in the mine accidents in Turkey.

Some 10.4 percent of total work accidents in Turkey occur in mines.

The worst mine accident in Turkey's history occurred in the province of Zonguldak in 1992, killing 263 workers.
