Iranian oil ministry has banned import of non euro-4 standard gasoline, an official from the ministry announced.

"The country's oil minister, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh has ordered that gasoline cargos not conforming to Euro-4 standard not be permitted into the country, official with the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), Saeed Naghedinia said, the country's SHANA news agency reported on May 19.

The imported gasoline cargos are to be unloaded in the ports only after sampling and quality testing, Naghedinia said.

The standard amounts of the aromatic, sulphur and benzene, should be less than 35 percent, 50 PPM and 1 percent respectively, the official said, adding that the octane number of Euro-4 gasoline should be up to 90. He went on to say that Iran has not imported non euro-4 standard gasoline since March 20.

Previously the managing director of the NIORDC, Abbas Kazemi forecasted that Iran's production capacity of gasoline conforming to Euro-4 standard will reach 40 million liters per day by March 20, 2015, which would take care of 62.5 percent of the country's total consumption. Kazemi added the country currently imports 5.5 million liters of gasoline per day.

Iran earlier announced production of gasoline in domestic refineries should be halted due to high pollution, and 10 million liters of gasoline should be imported instead. In turn, Iran plans to import this amount of gasoline from abroad.

According to the oil ministry, Iran's petrochemical complexes will not produce gasoline and octane booster anymore.

Iran's gasoline consumption is around 65 million liters per day.
