Formalizing an association agreement between Georgia and the EU is not directed against Russia, Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze told the media on May 23.

She was commenting on Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich's statement.

Moscow calls on Tbilisi to understand the consequences of signing the agreement with the EU, according to the statement.

"The planned association agreement between Georgia and the EU is not directed against Russia or any other country," she said. "And I do not think this will be bad for anyone. Good relations with neighbors are in our interest. We do not intend to unite against someone. We seek for our country to continue building democracy and develop."

"Georgia must understand and track the consequences after the association agreement is signed with the EU," Lukashevich added.

Earlier, chairman of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said that the EU will sign an association agreement with Georgia at the EU summit in Brussels on June 27.

"The association agreement is not the ultimate goal of cooperation," he added.
