Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has criticized intervening in citizens' private life, saying that "whipping won't sent people to heaven".

It should be noted that after the Islamic revolution in 1979, whipping was foreseen as penalty for some crimes in the new Iranian Criminal Law.

"Let people relax and live their lives comfortably," Rouhani said, addressing people during the conference on Public Health Insurance in Tehran, Iran's State IRINN TV reported on May 24.

"Let people choose their own way to heaven," the president said, adding that the government should establish mental peace in the society.

Earlier Iranian media outlets quoted the head of Iran's Health and Treatment Committee Hossein-Ali Shahriari as saying more than 70 percent of people in the country are under psychological pressure.

In recent days the arrest of young Iranian men and women who created and published a video of themselves dancing to Pharrell Williams' "Happy" attracted attention to the private life issue in the country.

On May 21 all of the arrested people had been released except for the director of the video clip.

A Tweet from President Hassan Rouhani in which he said "happiness is our people's right. We shouldn't be too hard on behaviours caused by joy." has led to some speculation on the western media that he had a hand in their release.
