Uzbek President Islam Karimov and his Latvian counterpart Andris Berzins praised the successes achieved in cooperation between the two countries.

They pointed out that the dynamic development of the interstate relations will strengthen friendly ties between the Uzbek and Latvian people.

The remarks were made in the presidents' joint statement adopted on May 28 after the high-level negotiations that were held during the official visit of the Latvian president to Uzbekistan.

Latvian president visited Uzbekistan on May 27 at the invitation of Islam Karimov. His visit will last until May 29.

"The parties reaffirmed their commitment and readiness to expand the relations between the two countries based on the friendship and cooperation agreement between Uzbekistan and Latvia dated June 6, 1995," the joint statement said.

The two sides expressed interest in strengthening cooperation in international organizations, first of all in the UN and reaffirmed the importance of increasing the UN's role in ensuring sustainable development, security and stability in the world.

The presidents of Uzbekistan and Latvia also supported the further deepening of the relations between the European Union and Uzbekistan.

The presidents stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism and extremism, drug trafficking, transnational organized crime.

They also confirmed their interest in rapid political settlement of the situation in Afghanistan.

Presidents Karimov and Berzins stressed the progressive expansion of the trade-economic cooperation. They also emphasized that further expansion of cooperation in trade, transport and investment areas is a priority for the Uzbek-Latvian relations.

Mutual interest in increasing the volume and diversifying trade turnover, creating and joint use of shopping malls and logistic centers in Latvia was confirmed. This is required to organize long-term and stable supply of Uzbek export products to the markets of the Baltic countries, Scandinavia and other European countries.

The parties also highlighted the need for equitable use of transboundary water resources in Central Asia in line with the principles of international law. The presidents supported the EU position. The large hydroelectric facilities must be constructed on transboundary rivers of the region only after the mandatory objective international expertise is conducted to reveal their impact on the ecological and socio-economic security in the region, according to the EU position.
