Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned that the issue of human rights should not be used as a tool.

Zarif also accused the West of applying a double standard policy when it comes to the issue of human rights, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on June 3.

"Depriving people of medicine is a violation of human rights," said.

"No one can have a selective attitude towards the human rights issues. Human rights are a set of interconnected issues," Zarif added.

He went on to note that back in 1968 in its assembly on human rights, the international community declared that all rights are interconnected.

"Therefore, depriving people of food and medicine is a serious and systematic violation of human rights. Such a violation can be tried in international tribunals," Iranian minister noted.

Zarif also talked about the ongoing presidential election in Syria.

"The ballot boxes let Syrians determine their own future," he said.

"As an active country in the region, Iran respects the demands of the Syrian people and continues to offer help to the war-torn country," the official concluded.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks in a joint press conference with the foreign minister of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn.
