Georgia has sent a complaint to the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) on Russia, claiming it appropriated the dialing codes of South Ossetia.
Georgian National Communications Commission released a statement on the issue, which said Committee of Communications of South Ossetia and Ministry of Communications of Russia have signed an agreement regarding the dialing codes.
In accordance with the agreement, the dialing numbers of South Ossetia will begin with 7, fixed line code will be 850, and 998 for mobile codes.
The signed agreement is to remain active until South Ossetia enters the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and gets its own international dialing code.
The National Communications Commission of Georgia noted that ITU is a special information and telecommunication technologies agency under the UN. Georgia is the UN member since 1993.
Large scale military action was launched between Georgia and Russia in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
