Workers, machinery urgently evacuated from Georgia’s Dariali Gorge

Tbilisi, Georgia, June 6

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

Georgia has declared an emergency evacuation of workers from the Dariali Gorge.

The gorge is located at the east base of the Mount Kazbek, Georgia.

Georgian Regional Development and Infrastructure Ministry said on June 6 that sensors detected underground tremors at Mount Kazbek.

Following a special system that alarmed about the tremors, the workers and machinery were immediately evacuated from the area.

The workers were involved in construction of a new road running to the Georgian-Russian border. On May 17, the underground tremors triggered a landslide that destroyed this road.

Several trucks got trapped under the mudslide caused by tremors, while seven people went missing. The corpses of three of them have been found.

Currently, intensive round-the-clock work is carried out at the disaster site. However, it was suspended because of today's tremors.
