Turkey lists Boko Haram as terrorist organization

Baku, Azerbaijan, June 10

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Turkey has listed Boko Haram as a terrorist organization, Turkish Resmi Gazete (Official Gazette) reported on June 10.

It should be noted that the UN Security Council (UNSC) included Boko Haram into the list of terrorist organizations on May 22 at a request from the Nigerian authorities.

Nigeria's government appealed to the UNSC after the abduction of over 270 schoolgirls by the militants of Boko Haram. This happened in mid-April, triggering a wide international response. Many countries offered aid to Nigeria, including the military assistance, to search for the kidnapped girls.

The radical Islamist group Boko Haram operates in northern Nigeria. Its members oppose the Western model of education and try to achieve the introduction of Sharia across the country.

This group is responsible for most of terrorist attacks regularly occurring in different parts of Nigeria.

A year ago, the Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck declared the state of emergency in three north-eastern states of the country due to a threat of attacks from Boko Haram.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani said the Boko Haram has nothing to do with Islam.

On June 3, Turkey listed Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Nusra Front) as a terrorist organization. Jabhat al-Nusra is active on the territory of Syria.
