The imposition of martial law in Ukraine's east will even more untie the hands of the Ukrainian authorities, according to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Lavrov said he doesn't believe that the idea of imposing the martial law can lead to de-escalation.

"On the contrary, martial law is imposed in order to even more untie the hands of the authority and to more rely on another power, the military power, the brute power to quell protests in the south-east," the Russian minister said after the negotiations with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on June 18.

The political crisis in Ukraine was provoked in November, 2013 with the decision of the country's government to suspend the process of signing the association agreement with the European Union. This decision led to mass protests in Kiev's center, as well as other Ukrainian cities.
