A two-day international conference on migration, organized by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) opened in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government reported.

The forum was attended by representatives of 16 international organizations and 32 countries. Earlier it was reported that Turkmenistan jointly with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has developed an action plan to reduce stateless persons in the country.

Turkmenistan carries out work to strengthen the national legal framework, by joining the UN General Assembly Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons and the UN General Assembly Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness in this regard.

The IOM mission has operated in Central Asia since 1998 and in Turkmenistan since 2005. A number of projects have been implemented in the region during this time.

In accordance with the decree of the Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhamedov in 2011, citizenship was granted to more than 3,000 people living in the country that did not have it. Recently a decree was signed in accordance with which Turkmen citizenship will be granted to 786 people who are of different nationalities.
