By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Iraq is on the verge of split, Al JazeeraTürk TV channel quoted the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Massoud Barzani as saying on July 7.

He pointed out that Iraq's central government, headed by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, doesn't control the situation in the country.

"Sooner of later, KRG will declare its independence which is the right of the Kurds living in Iraq," Barzani said, adding that nevertheless, they will not claim for other lands in the region.

Previously, Barzani said that Kurdistan Regional Government is ready to hold a referendum on the status of the Kirkuk city.

He said currently, Kirkuk's status is a matter of dispute and under the Iraqi law, the referendum on the city's status was to be held in 2007, but it didn't take place for the political reasons.

Kirkuk is a disputed territory between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the central government of Iraq.

"Kirkuk is a historic city, which suffered a lot. We promise that the future of Kirkuk will be brighter thanks to the Peshmerga [special forces subordinating to the Kurdish administration]," Barzani said.

He underscored that the policy pursued by Iraq's central government has led to the growth of separatism and violence in Iraq and the country's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki should change his policy with respect to the Sunnis, Kurds, as well as ethnic minorities.

It was also reported that KRG is ready to hold a referendum on independence.

The militants of the terrorist organization known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), took control over the Iraqi town of Tal Afar on June 16 and the city's military airport also came under the control of the ISIL militants on June 22.

It was reported on June 25 that the Sunni groups in Iraq are taking up arms against the ISIL militants.

In particular, the 1920 Revolution Brigades group is armed against the militants. The 1920 Revolution Brigades group actively fought against Al-Qaeda terrorists in Iraq in 2007.

The activists of the Iraqi Islamic National Resistance, the Islamic Army of Iraq, Sunni Mujahideen Army are also armed.

The Iraqi prime minister rejected the proposal to create a transitional government with the Sunni insurgents that are not included in the ISIL.
