About 16,000 HIV-infected people have been registered in Kazakhstan as of Feb. 1, 2011, Kazakhstan Today reported. The figures were made publicly available by Marat Tukeyev, head of National Centre for Prevention and Control of AIDS.
As he told Kazakh "Liter" newspaper, since 2008 the situation has been stabilizing in Kazakhstan. There has been reduction of reported HIV- cases by about 8% annually. This may be compared to 7 percent increase of research activity in this field.
Mortality rate in 2010 was 16 per 1,000 people with HIV. Compared to 2006 the figures are 1.5 times less.
Tukeyev said about plans to launch a Kazakh website to promote healthy life style and increase awareness of HIV. The website is expected to be interesting and easy in use for all categories of Kazakh society.
