The elections of Maslikhat members (the Kazakh local representative body) will be held in 11 regions of the country instead of 45 constituencies on October 28, the Kazakh Central Election Commission said today.

'Around 10 deputies of the regional, eight urban and 27 deputies of district Maslikhats will be elected', a statement said.

According to the Constitutional Law on 'Elections in the Republic of Kazakhstan', the candidates for Maslikhat members are nominated by the republican and local public associations registered in the prescribed manner, as well as their departments and citizens through self-nomination.

A citizen of the Kazakh Republic who has reached 20 years of age may be a Maslikhat deputy. Citizens with incapacities as well as those held in custody are not entitled to elect or be elected.

As of September 24, around 94 candidates were nominated for Maslikhat membership. Around 58 were self-nominated.
