European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has arrived in Kazakhstan on his first official visit, the press service of the head of government told Trend on Monday.

During the visit Barroso met with the Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov. The sides discussed expansion of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the EU and exchanged views on the regional and international situation.

"Our relations with the EU have been and remain a priority," Akhmetov said.

In turn, Barroso said the EU and European Commission will continue to support the efforts of Kazakhstan on accession into WTO.

The parties also discussed the need for a new agreement to expand the partnership and cooperation.

According to Akhmetov, the agreement should raise relations between Kazakhstan and EU to a new level.

On the same day, Barroso met with the Speaker of the Majilis, Nurlan Nigmatullin.

On Monday, Akorda will host a meeting of the EU High Representative with the country's President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
