Kazakhstan intends to increase the transit potential of the Trans-Caspian transport corridor, Kazakhstan Railways President Askar Mamin said at the third Caspian Forum in Istanbul on Thursday.

"Launching the Marmaray tunnel, uniting the eastern and European parts of Istanbul, the Akhalkalaki -Kars railway branch construction and successful cooperation among Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia raises the potential of a Trans-Caspian transport corridor which would allow delivering cargo from the Chinese market to Europe," he said.

"Kazakhstan is implementing major projects in the area of improving transport and logistics infrastructure in the country," he said.

"The investments in the Kazakh transport sector are expected to reach $45 billion in 2014-2020," he said. "In particular, it is planned to lay 1500 kilometres of new railway lines in this period."
The third Caspian Forum organised by the Caspian Strategic Institute (HASEN), has brought together senior officials and representatives of companies and leading experts from all over the world.
During the forum, projects in the areas of energy, transport and finance in the Caspian Sea region were discussed and opportunities for future cooperation considered.
