A memorandum on the creation of a Geological Research Centre was signed on Feb.20 in Astana, Kazakh Ministry of Industry and New Technologies said.

"The centre will contribute to the creation of a world class infrastructure in Kazakhstan and scientific research laboratories. This in turn will lead to a substantial reduction in financial expenditure and time for processing geological materials by conducting analyses in the country," Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Industry and New Technologies Asset Issekeshev said at the signing ceremony.

The Geological Research Centre will comprise four units. An administrative office unit, laboratory-analytical unit, core storage, as well as for pilot industrial and experimental units.

The memorandum on the creation of this centre was signed by the chairman of the board of Kazgeologiya JSC Galim Nurzhanov and director general of Nazarbayev University Research and Innovation System Kanat Baygarin.

The signed memorandum aims to establish cooperation as part of the creation of a Geological Research Center for integrated geological, geochemical, mineralogical, pilot industrial, experimental and applied research of minerals and hydrocarbons, solid minerals and groundwater in Kazakhstan, as well as foreign countries.

It was earlier reported that an innovative intellectual cluster, the main element of which is the Scientific Park, will be created under Nazarbayev University JSC. The Scientific Park for its part will consist of various scientific and technical clusters in the spheres of geology, ICT and bio-medicine.

The 'Anchor' project at the Science Park is a geological cluster which will include: the School of Mining and Institute of Earth Sciences jointly with the Colorado School of Mines, as well as Geological Research Centre of Kazakhstan jointly with national geological exploration company Kazgeologiya JSC of Kazakhstan.

The company created in accordance with the president's order, aims to replenish the mineral resource base, attraction of investment and innovative technology in geological exploration to promote sustainable development of Kazakhstan's economy.
