Migration affects crime levels in Astana

Astana, Kazakhstan, March 21
By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend:

The migration process affects the crime situation in Astana, the prosecutor's office said on March 21.

"As of March 20, 2014, the law enforcement agencies received 35,100 reports of crimes for the same period in 2013 where it stood at 33,040 reported offences representing a 6.2 percent increase," the press service said.

This growth is stipulated by an increase in the population in Astana and migration of foreign citizens, as well as citizens of the republic coming from other regions.

'More than 90,000 foreign citizens visited Astana in 2013' a statement said. 'Some 52,000 citizens from other regions of the country moved into permanent residence in the city'.

However, the population consists not only of officially registered residents. There are a large number of unregistered internal migrants coming to work, students and relatives that remain out of the authorities' sight.

The law enforcement bodies are working intensively during the Novruz holiday.
