Nearly $ 110 mln to be allocated for Intelligent Transport System implementation in Astana

More than 20 billion tenge (182.04 tenge = 1 dollar) will be allocated to implement the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Astana through 2019, Astana LRT chairman of board Talgat Ardan said on April 9.

"Around 700 million tenge were spent to equip 42 intersections," he said during a briefing on the road transport complex development in the capital. "The total project cost is up to 22 billion tenge."

Ardan also said that Astana's ITS development strategy involves a phased coverage of the road network for 2014-2019 with the traffic regulation on 402 intersections. The first stage on the Saryarka and Turan prospects, Sarayshyk , Kunayeva, Dostyk, Siganak streets (42 junctions).

Some 271,000 vehicles were registered in Astana, the municipality said. Some 100,000 vehicles from suburban localities and regions arrive in the city every day. A decision was made to introduce the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to reduce traffic congestion in the road network by increasing its capacity. The system envisages the introduction of "smart" traffic lights to regulate the traffic flow. It was stressed that the flow rate in the city will increase from 20 kmh to 35 kmh by 2017 due to the system introduction.
