The passenger train running from Almaty to Atyrau derailed due to repair works violating the rules, according to preliminary data, chairman of Kazakh Transport Control Committee, Asset Asavbayev said.

He made the remarks at a press conference on Friday, April 25.

Asavbayev said an inspection is underway and other possible causes of the accident are not ruled out. The coaches, bogies and wheels are being checked.

He assured that the inspection results will be announced as soon as it is completed.

Some 13 cars of the passenger train No.42, which was en route from Almaty to Atyrau, derailed between the junctions of Zhanterek and Enbay at 328 kilometers of the railway, in the district of Kyzylkugin on April 19, 2014, at 17:55. The train consisted of 19 cars, including 16 passenger cars.

In total, 12 people were taken to the hospital (six people in Atyrau, and six in Makat station).

The accident resulted in the delay of nine passenger trains and 34 freight trains.

The reconstruction of the railway line was completed and the movement of trains was resumed on April 20, at 05:57.
