Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, claims to become one of the top-50 smartest cities in the world by 2017, according to the city's mayor, Imangali Tasmagambetov.

Tasmagambetov made the remarks on Wednesday, May 21 at the 5th International Investment Forum held as part of the 7th Astana Economic Forum.

"Astana claims to enter the list of top-50 smartest cities in the world by 2017. Just after two weeks we will launch a safe city pilot project," Tasmagambetov said, adding that the systems, which allow controlling the traffic, are already functioning in the pilot mode in Astana.

He stressed that the projects on modernizing the transport infrastructure and improving security for population have been launched as part of the project dubbed 'Smart Astana'.

Tasmagambetov also said given the fact that Astana will host the world exhibition 'Expo-2017', the Kazakh capital will acquire qualitatively new economic impetus, which is also an excellent opportunity for business.

"We have a specific goal - to create a fundamentally new innovative city with a clean environment and high living standards," Astana mayor said adding that a number of projects, presenting a quite profitable investment platform, have already been developed.
