Kazakhstan and Canada discussed the bilateral and multilateral cooperation issues during the visit of Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzhan Ashikbayev to Canada, Kazakh Foreign Ministry said on June 11.

Ashikbayev held negotiations with Canada's Foreign Minister John Baird, State Minister on International Relations and Consular Affairs, Lynn Jelic, as well as the deputies of the foreign minister.

The parties welcomed the intensification of the political dialogue and the successful development of the trade and economic partnership between Canada and Kazakhstan.
The members of Canada's federal government visited Kazakhstan in the last two years, while five members of the Kazakh government, the prosecutor general and other officials visited Canada.

Kazakhstan is the main trade partner of Canada among the CIS countries, Eastern and Central Europe. Canada is the leading partner of Kazakhstan in the Americas. The trade turnover between the two countries exceeded $6 billion in 2012-2013.

Alongside traditional cooperation in the oil, gas, uranium and agricultural sectors, as well as in the sphere of education, the two sides emphasized the great prospects for the mutually beneficial cooperation in the civil aviation, in particular with Canadian Bombardier company. This company is the world's third largest civil aircraft manufacturer and the largest producer of railway equipment.

The two sides expressed support for holding a regular dialogue between the foreign ministries of Canada and Kazakhstan and creating a business council on trade and economic partnership issues.

Ashikbayev presented Kazakhstan's application for a non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018.

Visa facilitation issues were discussed during the negotiations between the Deputy Foreign Minister Ashikbayev and Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander.
