Almost every fifth teenage girl at the age of 10-20 smokes in Kyrgyzstan, Irina Medvedeva Assistant Science Director of the National Maternity and Child Protection Center told the press conference at the news agency 24.kg, devoted to Prevention of smoking among pregnant project.

The rate is reportedly growing from year to year. "But all the girls will become mothers in future. Smoking can affect health of a child. Due to the habit of their mothers children are frequently born with underweight, hypotrophy and bronchopulmonary problems," Medvedeva said.

"Health Generation Social Fund jointly with representative office of British American Tobacco (BAT) in Kyrgyzstan worked out project on reduction and prevention of smoking among pregnant women, maternity and child protection," Bakytjan Amanov chief of BAT office said.

In Amanov's view, the project will contribute to strengthening of health of future mothers, inculcation in them responsibility for their children.

"At least 5 thousand booklets and one thousand posters on the theme were distributed among Bishkek maternity hospitals, family practice centers, higher education institutions and drug stores as a part of the project from November till December 2009," Timur Tashkulov Director General of A-CIC company said.
