The governments of Tajikistan and Russia signed a cooperation agreement on Tuesday, the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

It was reached during the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Tajikistan.
The agreement was signed by Lavrov and the Minister of Economy and Trade of Tajikistan Sharif Rahimzoda and took into account the intentions of the parties to contribute to the expansion of friendly relations between the two countries. They also recognised the practical importance and potential mutual benefits from the sustainable development of their co-operation between territorial entities, as well as the desire to develop long term cooperation between the territorial areas of Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan, and strengthen the legal basis for such cooperation.

Tajikistan and Russia have agreed to strengthen cooperation and development of territorial units on the basis of equality and mutual benefit in accordance with the laws of each state and the international treaties to which they belong.

They also agreed to promote trade and economic, scientific, technical, social, cultural, ethno-cultural and humanitarian cooperation, as well as in education, healthcare, information technology, energy and agriculture.

Moscow and Dushanbe, also agreed to facilitate the implementation of joint programs and projects.

The agreement will run for five years and come into force from the date of the last written notification to the parties on the implementation of the internal procedures necessary for it.
