Russian deputy defence minister arrives in Dushanbe

Deputy Defence Minister of Russia Anatoly Antonov arrives in Dushanbe on Tuesday night, a source close to the government circles told Avesta.Tj.

He said Antonov's visit is linked to the Tajik-Russian negotiations on a military base, in particular matching negotiation positions of the parties under on terms of the further stay of the Russian military base in Tajikistan.

The source did not rule out that during the visit Antonov will meet with the political leadership of the country.

It should be recalled that Antonov visited Dushanbe in early August this year, where he held talks with the president, the foreign minister, the prime minister and the leadership of the Ministry of Defence of Tajikistan.

Then, at a meeting with reporters, touching on the Tajik-Russian negotiations on a military base, Antonov said in particular: "The negotiations on the further presence of the Russian military base in Tajikistan are under way, as the base is a guarantor of regional security, and the security of Tajikistan."

"Now I can not reveal the whole process of negotiations, at least - it would be unethical, as we are not talking about buying bananas, but raise the issue of security. I can only say that the day before we were able to make significant progress on this issue," Antonov said then.

"I wish that we will soon have come to a text of the treaty, which would be consistent with the national interest both of Tajikistan and Russia. For us the most important thing is that the contract was of high quality. There is no question of any bargaining, there is an attempt to take into account the interests of two states," he added.
